HOME COOKING:

  • How do I get started with home-cooking for my dog?
    • Beginners fear not - We’ve written up an extensive guide for you here! Please email us with any questions at hello@opalpets.com. We’re here for you! (Optional: attach cute pics of your dog :) )
  • Is home-cooked plant-based food healthy for dogs?
    • Yes! The most important element of any diet for dogs is that it is complete and balanced. When home cooking for your dog, it’s important to include a supplement to ensure they’re nutrient requirements are fully met. Since dogs are omnivores after evolving alongside humans for thousands of years, they can digest and make excellent use of the abundant healthy foods of a plant-based diet. Learn more about home-cooking for your pup here in our Opal Beginners Guide.
  • Is home cooking better than buying a commercial diet?
    • Compared to a processed kibble or wet food diet, which is heated at very high temperatures, a balanced, home-cooked diet can be rich in absorbable nutrition. Fresh foods have shown to correlate with a longer lifespan in dogs (see one study here). Adding more fresh meals to your dog’s diet is an excellent way to increase their overall health. Just make sure the meals are complete and balanced with a supplement
  • How long do the recipes take to prepare?
    • This can vary! We suggest using simple, quick recipes that are super nutritious and balanced when Opal powder is added. Our favorite go-to recipe is our ___ in the Opal e-book. This recipe takes about 15 minutes to make and only uses __ ingredients. Learn more about home-cooking in our beginners guide here
  • Can I prepare the recipes in bulk and freeze them?
    • Yes! Preparing multiple servings of meals for your dog at once is a great way to save on time and simplify the home-cooking process. Once you cook up the meals, we recommend storing them in air tight, portioned containers for up to 2 weeks in the freezer.
  • Is home cooking cheaper than buying a commercial diet?
    • This depends on which recipes you follow, but often using fresh whole foods like veggies, grains and plant-protein and very cost-effective. Most of our simple recipes in the Opal Homecooking E-book are less than $___ per meal and only use ___ ingredients.
  • Can I substitute other foods in the recipes?
    • We recommend feeding our suggested e-book recipes as-is since they’re formulated to be complete and balanced nutrition when Opal powder is added at meal time. Remember to always ask your veterinarian if you have any questions about your dog’s home-cooked diet, or send us an email to hello@opalpets.com with any questions! We’re happy to help.
